New details of the negotiations, which were held yesterday in Moscow by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, became known. Immediately after their end, the American President stated that Tillerson has done an excellent job in Moscow, and the negotiations themselves might have gone better than expected. The world press was full of completely different headlines. Tatyana Remezova, our observer, joins us.
The most interesting is what kind of aftertaste these talks left the participants with. On the eve, leaving the final press conference, we drew attention to the fact that the motorcade of the US Secretary of State remained for quite a long time at the entrance of the reception house of the Foreign Ministry on Spiridonovka. And that's what Minister Lavrov said today: I liked how we spent yesterday. First of all, of course, the President had a very important conversation. It lasted for about two hours. Then, our talks took place before the meeting in the Kremlin, and after the press conference. We, by the way, talked informally for about an hour about the opportunities that arise. It’s always better to talk with each other than to speak on the microphone and say what you think about each other, without looking into the eyes of the counterpart. We probably won’t see results soon, as Lavrov admits. But there are quite practical agreements that will begin to be implemented immediately.
In particular, special representatives from Russia and the United States will be assigned, who, without unnecessary emotions and artificial exacerbations, will conduct an audit of all the irritants in relations between Moscow and Washington. It’s already known that those will be Lavrov's and Tillerson's deputies. The work group on relations normalization will be created in the next 2-3 months. And how did the West evaluate the results of these negotiations? What does the confused foreign press write? Ernes, I personally saw that an impressive pool of American journalists flew to Moscow with Tillerson. They all heard and saw it with their own eyes.
However, today, after I reviewed the headlines of their articles, it seemed to me that these headlines and analyses were prepared in advance, even before the ministers talked to the press. For example, CNN published the following headline: "Trump's hopes for warmer relations with Russia in deep freeze". The Vox portal reports: "Rex Tillerson’s first visit to Moscow showed that the Trump-Russia lovefest is dead". The British newspaper The Times is more careful: "Tillerson’s emollient approach smoothed way for wary truce". Probably, it was more than Tillerson expected. From the very beginning, he chose a calming approach. His body language at the press conference suggested that he and Lavrov, began to forge cautious relations.
Donald Trump posted the following on Twitter today. "Things will work out fine between the USA and Russia. At the right time, everyone will come to their senses and there will be lasting peace". It’s clear that the differences remain, and very serious ones. First of all, regarding the investigation of the chemical attack in Syrian Idlib and the future fate of President Assad. But there is something in common. Moscow and Washington are ready to fight terrorism together.
